Why trading Jordan Matthews made sense:

Before beginning, we should all be made aware that we’ll be saying goodbye to one of the best celebrations in the NFL.

Take a look:

Matthews becomes expendable:

There were the signings of Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith. That went along with the addition of two new rookie receivers, Mack Hollins of the North Carolina Tar Heels and Shelton Gibson of the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Eagles had been rumored to be in trade talks with other teams for the services of Jordan Matthews ever since.

Matthews was entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract. Seeking a long term extension this off season meant the Eagles needed to compare numbers and contracts to those of other free agent wide receivers. That could have cost the Eagles north of ten million dollars in order to retain the former Vanderbilt standout.

As stated by Howie Roseman, the Eagles have many players that hit the open market in 2018. That includes fellow wide receiver Alshon Jeffery.
