We may need to reserve ourselves to the idea that we, as Eagles fans, may have seen Darren Sproles for the final time in the NFL.

Well, Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles‘ trip to the doctor revealed even worse news than we originally expected. Not only has he suffered a broken arm. He’s also torn his ACL. The Eagles placed Sproles on the team’s injured reserve on Sunday night. This recent development will no doubt, end his season and, quite possibly, his career.

ESPN insider for the NFL, Adam Schefter, reported the news that was relayed to both him and Chris Mortensen shortly after breakfast this morning.

Here’s the tweet from Schefter’s twitter account:

Monday, Sproles will have surgery on his arm. Later in the season, he’ll have corrective surgery on his knee. The injury came during the first half of a week-three victory over the rival New York Giants. He went down after being taken to the ground by Giants safety Darian Thompson.

At first glance, it appeared Thompson grazed Sproles’ knee. Once we heard it was an injury to the arm, it becomes easier to see something weird happened with Sproles wrist, but he walked off of the field and walked to the locker room under his own power.

None of us were prepared for what we’ve learned today.

Career over?

The immediate reaction by most Eagles fans is no one wants for this to be their final memory of Sproles in an Eagles jersey. 2017 was believed to be his final season, but hopefully the competitor in him leads him to come back and go out on his on terms. Former Giants great Lawrence Taylor did it. Then again, Sproles turns 35 on June 20th of next year, and he plays, arguably, the most punishing position in all of sports.

Next: Jake Elliott is the toast of Philadelphia

Whatever his decision, he has the respect of teammates, peers and fans.

Take a look:

Everyone’s thoughts and prayers are with both him and his family.
