ITI: Cam Newton is viewed as one of the best young quarterbacks in the league. Personally, I’ve seen too many slumps. Outside of the Super Bowl year, I haven’t seen much except quite a few statements he shouldn’t have made and some inconsistency. Was the MVP year a sign of the real Newton or was he overachieving?

Cat Crave:

While Newton is a polarizing figure with many critics and fans, his play is unquestionable. He is obviously not the prototypical pocket passer like Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Instead, Newton brings a dynamic skill set to the position and has shown improvement this season.

Prior to 2015, he set records for both passing and receiving yards. He was the first rookie to throw for 4,000 yards in a season, and he set a record for quarterback rushing touchdowns. He was also named to the Pro Bowl in 2011 and 2013. Obviously in 2015 he excelled but it shouldn’t have come as a surprise.

His struggles last year came as a result of an offensive line riddled with injury. Now, he has solid protection to this point in the season. He has a new offensive weapon in running back Christian McCaffrey. He has proven capable of, again, performing at his MVP level, especially these last two weeks.
