Philadelphia Eagles VP Howie Roseman may have to work his magic again
Who knows how Howie’s done it, but he may have to do it again.
Philadelphia Eagles vice president of football operations Howie Roseman may have missed his calling. Maybe he was supposed to be a financial advisor for high-dollar clients. Instead, he landed in the Eagles executive suite. That’s been great for Eagles fans.
Sure, we may all be feeling a little buyer’s remorse for the Vinny Curry extension, but, mostly, Howie’s done what’s right. He’s the reason the Eagles have their quarterback of the future, Carson Wentz. He’s the reason the Eagles were able to sneak back into the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft and take defensive end Derek Barnett. That was something that was supposed to be impossible once the trades were made to get the Eagles into the second-overall selection.
Not bad for a team that seemed to be thin at the skill positions when the season began.
Let’s take a look back and ahead.
All any of us could talk about when the 2017 offseason began was how the Eagles seemed to be thin at linebacker, wide receiver and running back. Then somehow, with what seemed like five dollars to spend, Roseman brought three of the free agency period’s highly touted prospects into the Novacare Complex and managed to keep them there.
Philadelphia Eagles
Torrey Smith was signed to a one-year deal, a deal that had second and third year options. Then, he signed Alshon Jeffery to a one-year deal, and he picked up LeGarrette Blount as well. Jeffery’s since been extended. The future of Blount in Philly may be a little cloudy, but that has to do with more than just his decreased workload he’s seen over the last few weeks.
It’s more about what happens when it’s time to re-sign our own next season.
More moves still need to be made.
We at ITI realized something. It’s a good thing that it isn’t our job to juggle the salary cap. No abacus or calculator would have been able to help us. If signing players was an issue last season, what happens when it’s time to rework cornerback Ronald Darby and running back Jay Ajayi next season? How do the recent re-signings of Alshon Jeffery and defensive end Timmy Jernigan play in? Does this mean the Eagles almost have to let Blount go? Will the Eagles be able to be players in next season’s free agency period?
Next: Trent Cole will officially retire on Christmas
No one’s certain about any of this at the moment, but one thing’s certain. As Eagles fans, we’ll all be watching closely. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
