Expect Philadelphia Eagles DC Jim Schwartz to be mentioned among the hot head coaching prospects.

There weren’t many fans of the Philadelphia Eagles or football pundits were expecting a 13-3 regular season. It’s been further proof of something most of us knew. They’ve employed one of the more competent coaching staffs in the entire NFL. Now, with six head coaching jobs opening up as of ‘Black Monday’ and the possibility of, at least, another four or so teams joining the search for a head coach, it’s almost inevitable that Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz goes ‘one and done’ in Philly.

Expect him to be one of the hot coaching prospects for a struggling team looking for a head man.

Success breeds both jealousy and admiration.

There’s an old saying that goes ‘success breeds envy’. As true as that may be, there’s also another aspect of being successful and the fallout that comes from it. Success can also breed admiration. There may be quite a few teams who look to the Eagles coaching staff in an attempt to fill their head coaching vacancies. There’s a possibility that Philly could lose both John DeFilippo and Jim Schwartz.

The New York Giants have a new general manager, Dave Gettleman, and it appears that one of his first orders of business was to seek out Schwartz for an interview. Shortly thereafter, once we learned of Bruce Arians‘ retirement, we also found out the Arizona Cardinals contacted the Eagles to request permission to interview Schwartz as well.

Both interviews will take place during Wild Card week. That’s the only allowable time that teams will be able to interview Schwartz or DeFilippo seeing as how the Eagles have a first-round bye.

This shouldn’t be a surprise.

Again, this shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. This happens in the NFL all the time. The Eagles have several assistant coaches that can succeed at the head coaching level (we haven’t even brought up the brilliance of Dave Fipp and what he’s done on special teams). Schwartz has head coaching experience already, having coached 81 games in the NFL as the head man. We know Giants owner John Mara wants an experienced head coach, and obviously, Schwartz now has experience with the NFC East being on the Eagles coaching staff all season.

Next: Doug Pederson remains confident in Nick Foles

Selfishly, if you’re a fan of ‘The Birds’, it’s hard not to look at this and wonder if that could lead to distraction during a playoff run if your head coach has already accepted a job elsewhere. This, for the Giants, is another sign of new beginnings as the team has a new GM, they’ll have a new head coach and, with the second-overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, they could have a new young signal caller.

Might they take Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold if either are available?
