The Philadelphia Eagles may be in the market for a backup tight end. Could Martellus Bennett be their new veteran backup?

The Philadelphia Eagles may be losing one of their biggest breakout stars of 2017. Tight end Trey Burton is on his way to getting paid as the free agency market opens up. Last week, it was reported that Burton has at least 16 teams interested in him. With that knowledge, the Eagles have decided it may be unrealistic to get Burton back.

Sure, the Eagles have a star tight end in Zach Ertz, but they have proven to be the team that favors multiple star players at the same position. With the potential loss of Burton and the possibility of cutting the aging Brent Celek, could the Eagles bring in a younger and cheaper option?

Considering that the Eagles have acquired defensive end, Michael Bennett. Rumor has it that the veteran lineman could potentially be the reason that the Eagles make a run for his brother, tight end Martellus Bennett. ESPN’s Kirk Morrison mentioned the possibility of a Bennett Brothers reunion on Monday afternoon.

Martellus to the Eagles?

Bennett would be an interesting pickup for the Eagles. Although there is a possibility it could happen, it is doubtful the Eagles go through with this move. All character issues aside, Bennett’s production just hasn’t been off the charts in the past. After his comeback season in 2017 with the New England Patriots, Bennett hasn’t really proved that he could excel in a more prominent role.

Considering the Eagles have met with many tight ends at the combine, they are expected to draft one in the middle rounds. They also have high hopes for a kid named Billy Brown. He has been on board with the Eagles practice squad this past season.

As of right now, the Eagles have some business to take care of concerning Celek and Burton. So don’t expect any immediate signings of Martellus Bennett. Or any tight end for that matter. There is still a good chance that Celek could take a pay cut and stay on board for what will most likely be his final season in the NFL. So for those of you who are expecting a Bennett Brothers reunion, don’t get your hopes up high just yet.
