Brent Celek receives a fond farewell from his former Eagles teammates
The longest-tenured member of the Eagles roster was released on March 13th, and while the move wasn’t a shocker, it still sent a rippling effect throughout the organization.
Former Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek‘s legacy won’t be defined by a ton of touchdowns. It wasn’t a career that would ensure his enshrinement into Canton, Ohio’s Pro Football Hall of Fame. None of that will matter to any Eagles fan however. He wasn’t picked up in free agency. He wasn’t part of some blockbuster trade. Celek was drafted 162nd overall by the Eagles, and his run there went on for 11 seasons.
Celek was special because he embodied everything the Eagles were all about. He caught touchdown passes from Michael Vick (10), Donovan McNabb (11, including the three in the postseason), Nick Foles (5), Kevin Kolb (3), Sam Bradford (2), Mark Sanchez (2), and Carson Wentz (1). Three coaches paced the sidelines during his career, and every one of them found a place for him on their active roster.
Celek meant everything to the Eagles, but don’t take our word for it, ask his teammates.
Take a look at some of the feedback on social media.
Wait. Did Malcolm Jenkins just say Brent Celek laid the groundwork for the Eagles to win the Super Bowl? Yes he did! Don’t worry. There’s more.
Here’s something from their franchise quarterback.
Then, Lane Johnson got in the act.

Perhaps the most heartwarming moment was seeing Celek released in the A.M. and then seeing him receive a standing ovation several hours later at a Philadelphia 76ers game.

And some of you ask why we say Philly fans are the best. Perhaps the greatest thank you comes from the only team he’s ever played for in his 11-year career.
Does anything else need to be said? Here’s his career numbers. He hauled in 398 receptions for 4,998 yards and 31 touchdowns. Don’t be surprised if Philly retires the number 87.
