Could the Philadelphia Eagles find their Donnie Jones replacement with Marquette King?

One of the more shocking moves of the offseason thus far was new Oakland Raiders head honcho Jon Gruden cutting Pro Bowl punter, Marquette King. Ordinarily, a punter getting released wouldn’t be such big news. But punters are people too, and this move nonetheless sent shockwaves across the league.

One person who took notice of the release was Philadelphia Eagles running back Jay Ajayi, who seems very open to bringing on the superstar punter to the team. Shortly after the news broke that King was being released, Ajayi took to Twitter to express his interest in bringing King to the midnight green.

Ajayi’s recruitment:

There isn’t a much better spokesperson than Ajayi. He has first-hand experience on what it’s like joining the Eagles as he was traded midway through last season. Ajayi knows from a personal standpoint just how quickly players are welcomed into the Eagles locker room.

King is coming off an all-pro season, but a supposed personal clash happens to be the reason why Gruden cut ties with the ball booter. His tendencies to celebrate and “shuck and jive” after coffin corner punts were seen as bringing too much attention to a position that doesn’t usually warrant it.

With that being said, it would make perfect sense for the Eagles to bring him in. Former punter Donnie “bag of bones” Jones aka Donnie Longball decided to hang up his cleats, helmet, and post-game do-rag by retiring. Which now provides a glaring hole in the roster since every team needs a punter.

What better person to bring in than a former all-pro who is still fairly young. Considering that punters can play into their 40’s, King could stick around for awhile. His personality would fit right in with the happy go lucky, fun to love Philadelphia Eagles.

It would also be a cheap signing since he is a punter, albeit one of the best, and Howie Roseman has been on fire as of late with the inexpensive low risk, high reward signings. Time will tell on whether or not the team pulls the trigger, but for now the Jay Train seems to be conducting this hype machine.
