Nick Foles admits that he wants another chance at being a starter
Can you blame Nick Foles for wanting another opportunity to shine as a starter?
When the Philadelphia Eagles initially traded Nick Foles away back in 2015, he was expected to get his big opportunity with the St. Louis Rams. Unfortunately, the Eagles, I mean, Chip Kelly did not see a future with Foles under center. So the Eagles sent Nick Foles to the Rams, giving him another opportunity to become a franchise quarterback elsewhere.
Clearly, we all know that things didn’t work out for Foles on the Rams. We can blame his supporting cast or the coaching of Jeff Fisher, but either way, Foles did not look like a star with the Rams. So off he went to the Kansas City Chiefs where he backed up Alex Smith for a season. Once again, Foles reassured teams that he was able to play quarterback in this league if called upon.
That’s when the Eagles brought Foles back for his second stint with the Eagles. Foles knew that he was coming in to back up Carson Wentz, but he had no idea that he would end up being the Super Bowl MVP by the end of the 2018season.
After hoisting the Vince Lombardi trophy back in February, the public thought that Foles would be traded in no time considering the demand for quarterbacks in the 2018 offseason. But somehow, teams were not interested enough to pay the asking price for Foles. So as the 2018 offseason progresses, how does Foles feel about heading into the season knowing that he takes a backseat to Wentz when he returns?
Foles wants his second chance:
As we all know, Nick Foles is a quiet guy when it comes to the media. Although he has gained more of a media presence throughout this past season, he stayed out of the spotlight for the last couple months. Just the other day though, Foles took part in a TV interview with KVUE in Texas. Of course, he was asked about his opinion on trade talks, and Foles remained completely honest.
94 WIP sports radio in Philadelphia highlighted what Foles said concerning his current position as the Eagles backup quarterback.
"“Yeah, I think the first step is we start our offseason program the 16th [of April] in Philly. We love Philly. There was some stuff going around, a possible trade, and I would love the opportunity to be a starter again.“I know my spot in Philly. I think I’ve shown what I can do. I’m signed for one more year and I love the team, I love the city. I’m excited for Carson [Wentz] to get back on his feet. I’ll be ready to go whenever they need me. But we’ll see. Just living in the moment."
What to expect in the offseason:
Clearly, Foles isn’t in a rush to leave Philadelphia. But to say that the man doesn’t want a fresh start as a starting quarterback would be bogus. Face it, Foles is a fantastic leader, but most of all he is a big-time competitor. While he does an excellent job as a backup in the NFL, he has proven once again that he is capable of winning games in the NFL.
Although we don’t think that Foles will just play anywhere, a collaborative effort between Foles and the Eagles front office could land him in an ideal situation for the 2018 season if the price is right. As of right now, it sounds like Foles is just going to play his role as the reliever, but we can guarantee he is as good as gone when 2019 rolls around. After all, the man just wants his second shot to be great. He had his high moment in Philadelphia, and soon he will have it once again somewhere else.
