Howie Roseman still made the right choice when trading for Worley

Despite the release of Daryl Worley, Howie Roseman still made the right decision trading for him.

“What a bad move by Howie Roseman!” you may hear once or twice throughout the day on Monday. Just this past weekend, the Philadelphia Eagles have released one of their new cornerbacks, Daryl Worley. We’re sure you have heard about it all by now, but in case you haven’t, Daryl Worley was arrested on Saturday morning, which led to the Eagles washing away any involvement that they had with the third-year veteran in the first place.

Some may criticize the fact that the Eagles got rid of Worley so quickly without gathering as much information as possible. Others may be fine with the fact that the Eagles cut Worley almost immediately. But the most shocking reaction coming from the Eagles fan base is the criticism of Howie Roseman’s initial decision to trade for Worley.

Is Howie to blame?

All Roseman bias aside, the trade for Worley back in March looked great then, and it still seems decent now. How does that make sense, though? Think about it; the Eagles were getting rid of veteran wide receiver Torrey Smith one way or another. It’s understandable that the Eagles and their fan base loved Smith’s locker room contributions, but on the field, he just wasn’t cutting it.

The Eagles casually shopped Smith around to see if there were any potential buyers before they put him on the waiver wire. Fortunately, the Carolina Panthers were in the same boat with a 23-year-old Daryl Worley. So just like that, the Eagles and the Panthers decided to swap out a 29-year-old receiver who is past his prime for a 23-year-old cornerback who issues some upside. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work out for the Eagles.

With or without Daryl Worley, the Eagles are going to survive at cornerback. Even if Worley stayed out of trouble off the field, he still wasn’t a lock to make the final 53-man roster by the end of training camp. And as for the Torrey Smith-less wide receiver corps, they are going to be just fine. Remember, the Eagles upgraded Smith’s burner position with another veteran by the name of Mike Wallace.

So point the finger at Howie Roseman all you want. At the end of the day, he made the right business decision that just didn’t pay off in the end, unfortunately. Even though the trade looks like a failure, it undoubtedly won’t affect the Eagles too much. You can’t miss what you never had, right?
