Take it from the experts. The Philadelphia Eagles may have struck gold with the selection of Dallas Goedert.
It doesn’t appear as though it will be easy to find any major issues with the Philadelphia Eagles‘ selection of tight end Dallas Goedert. There’s just one problem. The fact that Philly’s newest tight end played for something called the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. It made for the somewhat difficult task of finding reliable information.
Research is what we do here at ITI however. It didn’t take long to learn Goedert’s selection has his teammates and coaches excited. Then, there’s the Philly media they cant seem to stop praising the six-foot-five, 225-pound tight end.
Nothing’s perfect, however, and as much as his hands and ability to make tough catches are an asset, his route running and ability to separate are a concern. There are questions about whether or not he’ll be elite at the next level or if he’ll just be serviceable.
Let’s search the web a little.
Before we get to the Philly media and the Eagles, let’s see what Walterfootball.com had to say about Goedert in his draft profile.
Take a look:
"For the NFL, Goedert has the ability to contribute as a receiver. While he will struggle to separate from NFL linebackers or safeties, he can use his size and high-point ability to make catches over defenders. He will be an asset in the red zone with his skills to sky high and make tremendous catches with body control and uncanny one-handed skills. Goedert is adept at finding the soft spot in zone coverage, and his size makes him tough to tackle for defensive backs. Thus, Goedert could be a quality receiving tight end in the pros, although he probably won’t be elite given the lack of speed, suddenness, and an ability to separate."
The team he made so many plays for showed a ton of love following his selection. Take a look:

Meanwhile, on the Eagles’ official Twitter account, they were showing love to their young tight end:

Then, there are the experts. The guys that cover the Eagles every day did a little research of their own. What did they have to say? Let’s take a gander.
Here’s Pro Football Focus‘ take, as well as the opinions of some well-known names to Eagles fans:

Interestingly enough; our very own @TheBenNatan compared Dallas Goedert to... Zach Ertz! https://t.co/c3YZ26EAwD

Dallas Goedert is excellent value at 52. Tremendous receiver, with potential to become a solid blocker. Big frame. Good athlete. Freaky good hands.

Love the pick of Dallas Goedert. I think he was the most complete tight end in the draft. With Brent Celek and Trey Burton gone he was both the best available athlete and at a position of need.

#Eagles add another pass-catching TE to pair up with Zach Ertz. Dallas Goedert can block at the point of attack, or at least did at South Dakota State. Something to consider: Brent Celek was 27, like Ertz, when the Eagles drafted Ertz in the 2013 second round.

The newest Eagles tight end, the first they’ve selected since Zach Ertz in 2013, seems pretty happy.
