You’ve heard the pick’s name. It’s Avonte Maddox, but what does he mean in terms of the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense?

It seemed like a week went by in between the Philadelphia Eagles‘ selection of tight end Dallas Goedert and when they were on the clock again. Eventually, their time came. When it did, 76 other names had been called. The 2018 NFL Draft had been a grueling process, but Philly remained steadfast and made their selection. When, they did, they decided on former Pittsburgh Panthers cornerback, Avonte Maddox.

Everyone knows that at this point, so let’s not waste any more time. Here are three things you need to know about the Eagles new defensive weapon.

1. In a world where statistics rule, especially if you’re a fantasy football junkie, you  new we’d look at numbers, right?

In his first three seasons at Pitt, Maddox had 156 tackles, six interceptions and 23 pass breakups. Then, as a senior, he racked up 27 tackles, two picks, four sacks and 11 pass breakups. The work he put in at the Senior Bowl is probably what drafted him onto draft boards and why he’s a member of the Philadelphia Eagles today.

2. What did his draft profile say?

It’s so nice of you to ask. Here’s what NFL.com had to say:

"Maddox is sure to get a glowing review from his coaching staff as he has been a model leader and worker during his time at Pitt. While he plays with good toughness and has good athletic traits, his ability to stay connected in coverage has been problematic. Inconsistencies in man coverage combined with a smallish frame are a concern in my opinion, but his combination of long speed and short area quickness has him rising up the board."

Uh oh. Judging by that, it’s safe to say he’ll have a hard time surpassing a few of the guys the Eagles already have on the depth chart, isn’t it? Honestly, it’s too early to tell. That’s why we have training camps. Still, at this point, it’s safe to say he’s still looking up at the likes of Rasul Douglas.

3. He hates the Cowboys. That alone makes him a true member of the ‘Bird Gang’.

Don’t ask us how, but fans have already dug up something from Maddox’s past. This isn’t going to sour Eagles fans on him though. According to a recent story by NBCSports.com, an almost three-year-old tweet was found in which Maddox was found saying ‘Im gone be a ref just to mess the (Dallas) Cowboys season up’.

Is there any further proof that this guy should have, at least, had a chance to make the Eagles roster? If that doesn’t do it for any ‘Birds’ fan, nothing will.
