Just as we expected, the Philadelphia Eagles bring in another veteran running back.

The Philadelphia Eagles are still racking up some camp bodies as OTA’s kicks off. Over the last few days, the Eagles have hosted a handful of veterans for workouts. Three of which were running backs. Between three guys the Eagles worked out though, former Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins running back Matt Jones won the battle.

It was announced Wednesday morning that the Eagles had signed Matt Jones. The former third-round pick will join the NFC East once again. Jones entered the NFL back in 2015 when the Redskins drafted him with the 95th overall pick. After being expected to take the reigns of the backfield after the departure of Alfred Morris, Jones ultimately failed.

Now, Jones gets another chance in a different backfield. His last two seasons have been difficult, and this year probably won’t get any easier. The Eagles running back depth chart is already loaded up with plenty of names. Although there are a few guys who could potentially get cut by September, Jones is undoubtedly among that group of players.

Jones has been in the NFL for the past three seasons and has yet to surpass 1,000 yards. As of right now, Jones has tallied for 964 yards and six touchdowns, off of 248 carries. While this signing comes off as a bit of a surprise, it is pretty evident that the Eagles just plan to use the run-by-committee approach in the preseason with veterans.

The contract details have yet to be released, but it is highly-unlikely that the Eagles sign Jones beyond 2018. As of right now, he will likely be fighting for a roster spot along with Wendell Smallwood, Donnel Pumphrey, and Josh Adams. Considering Jones previous few seasons, he is a long shot to make the final 53-man roster when September rolls around.
