Despite being a backup, could Dallas Goedert be the best rookie tight end in the NFL?

Philadelphia Eagles front office generals once again had a great offseason on paper. Howie Roseman and his No. 2 Joe Douglas played chess like masterminds in the draft and the free agency market. The best player available approach in the NFL Draft is what is really paying off for the Eagles right now. Because as they head into OTA’s, many analysts predict that the Eagles scooped up the best tight end in the draft.

South Dakota State’s Dallas Goedert got the call from the Eagles when they traded up to the 49th overall pick. The tight end position wasn’t an immediate need since the Eagles already have a top-five guy in Zach Ertz. But we all know how the Eagles front office thinks. Why not stack up a position that is already good? The more, the merrier, right?

Well, the NFL world is very intrigued with the Eagles set of weapons in the passing game. For a draft class that was a bit loaded up with tight ends, it looks like the Eagles might’ve found the best guy out of the bunch. NFL Analyst Bucky Brooks put together his 2018 All-Rookie Team, and Eagles fans will really like what they see.

Goedert the top tight end?

We’ve seen the Eagles get the best out of all of their tight ends last season. Zach Ertz led the team in receiving yards and also collected eight touchdowns in the regular season. Trey Burton had a breakout year behind Ertz when he totaled for five touchdowns, which earned him a big payday with the Chicago Bears. And although Brent Celek was past his glory days, Doug Pederson still found a way to keep him in the game as a blocker.

So with Celek and Burton out of the picture, the Eagles found Goedert to be the new backup. But don’t think that the rookie is just sitting back and learning. He will get plenty of playing time from day one in 2018. We know it, you know it, and Bucky Brooks knows it. Here’s what the NFL analyst had to say about Goedert’s status as a potential breakout star.

"Dallas Goedert, Philadelphia Eagles (Round 2, No. 49). Eagles coach Doug Pederson quickly finds a way to take advantage of Goedert’s playmaking talents as a “jumbo” slot receiver."

Short, but to the point. Brooks is not wrong here. The Eagles were arguably the best red zone offense in 2017. And now they get even better in 2018 with Goedert on the field. Once Carson Wentz returns under center, this team is undoubtedly an offensive juggernaut.

We’re not saying that Goedert will win rookie of the year here, but teams definitely shouldn’t sleep on the smalltown kid. Pederson knows how to get the best out of his backups, and Goedert couldn’t have landed on a better team. With the Eagles, he will not only have an excellent mentor in Ertz, but he will have some valuable playing time as well while he is still learning.
