After spending two offseasons on the trade block, the Philadelphia Eagles do away with Mychal Kendricks.

The most shocking news of the day happened late Tuesday afternoon. Just hours after the Philadelphia Eagles wrapped up the first day of OTAs, they decided to release a well-known veteran. After spending six seasons with the Eagles, the team has decided to part ways with 27-year-old linebacker Mychal Kendricks.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported the news of the release on Tuesday. While the Eagles were expected to move on from Kendricks, it comes at a strange time. Just this past afternoon, the already thin-in-depth linebacker position suffered yet, another hit. Veteran linebacker Paul Worrilow was carted off the practice field in an air cast.

The Big News:

So, what now?

During Tuesday’s practice session, it was strange to see what the Eagles were doing with the linebackers. While everybody in attendance was getting work in, Kendricks was nowhere to be found, despite being in the practice facility. It was clear that the Eagles have really grown disinterested in Kendricks over time, despite his improvements in 2017.

Kendricks is coming off of a 77 tackle season. A significantly upgraded performance from 2016, where he only totaled 32 tackles in a decreased considerably snap count from 2015. But after the injury occurred to Jordan Hicks in 2017, the Eagles had no choice but to rely on Kendricks as a full-time starter. He didn’t disappoint.

But somehow, someway the Eagles are left unsatisfied with the veteran. During the offseason, the signed former Denver Broncos linebacker Corey Nelson to a one-year deal. Nelson made it clear that Jim Schwartz was giving him an opportunity to start in Philadelphia. So while the Kendricks news is shocking for now, it was expected. It’s just unfortunate that the Eagles could not get anything in return for the six-year veteran.
