Philadelphia Eagles: 30 greatest players in franchise history
By John Buhler
If we think back to Christmas night 2017, there was simply no way that quarterback Nick Foles was going to crack the top-50, let alone the top-30. He was just Carson Wentz‘s backup and played some horrendous football, albeit in a victory over the lousy Oakland Raiders. But Foles had something else in the tank come playoff time.
Despite being the No. 1 seed, Philadelphia was seen as the underdog in all three of their playoff contests this past winter. Most of that was on account of Foles. However, he beat the Atlanta Falcons in the divisional round, clobbered the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship and Philly Special-ed the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis.
Keep in mind that Foles was already a former Pro Bowler with the Eagles. He is forever in Eagles lore thanks to that terrific 2013 NFL season running Chip Kelly’s offense and that borderline unbelievable three-game stretch in the 2017 NFL playoffs. Foles might be Wentz’s backup, but winning Super Bowl LII MVP after being marginalized in a Jeff Fisher middle school offense with the St. Louis Rams is one of the best stories in NFL history in recent memory.
To date, Foles boasts a 17-10 regular season record with the Eagles over four seasons. He has completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 7,290 yards, 51 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. In four playoff starts, Foles is 3-1 with a 71.9 completion percentage for 1,166 passing yards, eight touchdowns and one interception. He might have to revert to clipboard holding duties in Philadelphia, but don’t question the legend of Foles in the City of Brotherly Love.
