Could the Eagles consider signing Donnie Jones again?
Word around the Nova Care Complex is that Cameron Johnston is struggling early on. What could the Philadelphia Eagles do?
With 2018 NFL training camps going on, we are bound to hear about players that are struggling to outperform their competition. For certain positions though, players can only beat themselves. Take Philadelphia Eagles punter Cameron Johnston, for example. The 26-year-old former Ohio State Buckeye is currently in a one-person competition during training camp since the random departure of Eagles veteran, Donnie Jones.
It wasn’t too long after the Eagles won the Super Bowl when Donnie Jones decided to call it quits and go out like a champion. But strangely, he decided that he might’ve ended his career a little too quickly. The 38-year-old punter eventually announced that he basically regretted his decision to retire, which forced the Eagles to cut him to free up some much-needed cap space.
Now, the Eagles are looking forward to life after Jones. While the punting position may not be a huge deal to the common fan, the Eagles sure would like to keep their special teams in check. After all, they have been known to have one of the better special teams units in the past. Although Cameron Johnston has the punting position all to himself right now, it sounds like he may not have it all locked up to himself for the regular season.
Could the Eagles bring Donnie back?
Donnie Jones may be close to 40, but it is obvious that he can still kick in the NFL. The Eagles made the right choice to release Jones in the spring due to the cap hit and the lack of overall punting last year, but that doesn’t mean that they can completely forget about the position.
If Johnston struggles, the Eagles could realistically bring back Donnie Jones as preseason is just a couple of weeks away. It probably wouldn’t take long for Jones to get back into the groove, but he would definitely have to settle for a cheaper salary. Even before Jones retired, he was already a potential release at the end of the 2017 season. But as Johnston continues to struggle, the Eagles could realistically bring Jones back before the start in September.
