Philadelphia Eagles second-year safety Tre Sullivan is starting to impress his coaches at training camp.

It’s tough to crack the Philadelphia Eagles final roster nowadays if a player comes from the practice squad. Just because it’s tough, doesn’t mean it is impossible, though. Especially if somebody plays for a position that is in need of depth. So, anybody that plays defensive tackle, linebacker, or safety for the Eagles right now is in luck.

To be brutally honest, the Eagles have seen some poor play from their defensive secondary last season. We might’ve missed it since the defense ended up being one of the best in the league thanks to excellent pressure from the men up front and the outstanding play by the linebackers. That doesn’t mean the secondary was always weak, but it could definitely use some work.

Last season, the regulars at safety were Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, and Corey Graham. While the band is back together once again, the Eagles are expecting a lot from their young guys still. That means the reality of Tre Sullivan or even Jeremy Reaves finding some significant playing time in the rotation in 2018 very much exists.

Is Tre Sullivan a lock to make the team?

Let’s get this straight first and foremost, Tre Sullivan is not a lock to make the Eagles final roster. Has he looked much improved from his days on the practice squad last year? Yes. But we haven’t reached the gameday phase of the offseason yet. This week, the young guns will get plenty of opportunities against the Pittsburgh Steelers as the preseason kicks off on Thursday.

Seeing as though Sullivan has caught the attention of pretty much everybody who has seen the Eagles practice, he will definitley find himself gaining some reps early on. The Eagles seem to believe that Sullivan has a ton of upside. Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz talked up Sullivan on Monday stating that “He’s a work in progress, but he’s trending the right way.”

If final cuts were today, Sullivan most likely makes the Eagles roster. With Chris Maragos on the ‘PUP’ list and Jeremy Reaves still learning how things go at the next level, Sullivan seems like the fittest candidate to play a limited role in the rotation. Hopefully, things pan out in the preseason for the 23-year-old defensive back. The Eagles could use some younger talent at the position for the future.
