Philadelphia Eagles roundup: Nick Foles starts versus Pats, Christian Hackenberg
As Philadelphia Eagles training camp practices close, Nick Foles prepares for his first preseason game, and the new guy, Christian Hackenberg, shares his excitement about his new team.
Here’s some good news if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles team. Nick Foles will start for ‘The Birds’ when they travel to Foxborough, Massachusetts to take on the New England Patriots for Philly’s second preseason game. Recently, newly acquired Christian Hackenberg also took some time to open up about his new team. More on that second thought in a second.
As you all are aware, Foles sat out of game one due to muscle spasms. That gave us an extended look at Nate Sudfeld. We learned two things a week ago. We learned how good Sudfeld could be. We also learned how bad he could be and how important Foles is.
Philly’s starting quarterback for the moment was present for all of ‘The Birds’ final four training camp practices, and he’ll start Thursday night. Isn’t it poetic that the first game he’ll appear in pits him against the team he beat to deliver the first Lombardi Trophy in team history to Philadelphia?
Now, let’s discuss the new guy.
For Christian Hackenberg, the hope is Philadelphia can be a new beginning. He’s been given a chance to resurrect his career with the Super Bowl champs. Unfortunately, phrases like ‘ long shot’ and ‘no chance’ are being tossed around.
With a roster that already houses Carson Wentz, Nick Foles, Nate Sudfeld and Joe Callahan at the quarterback position, it seems as though the three-man depth chart in Philly has already been decided. Still, Hackeberg is pumped about his opportunity.
Here’s a quote from the team’s official website:
"Yeah, I’m really excited. It’s impressive what they’ve done since they’ve been here and their tutelage is shown on the field. Carson (Wentz) has played really well, Nick (Foles) played incredibly, it goes down the line with that, so I’m really excited for this opportunity, I think these guys are awesome. It’s been a really receptive room, the coaching staff has been awesome, so I’m really excited."
The Eagles are trying to determine, for once and for all, if Hackenberg can play ball at the professional level. Keep in mind Sudfeld is a free agent after 2018, and no one knows how much longer Foles will play. Hackenberg doesn’t get much of a tuneup (or a great deal of reps) before the Patriots game, but he’s trying to soak in as much as he can.
Here’s more from PhiladelphiaEagles.com:
"I’m going to come in every day and learn as much as I can from these guys. I assume they signed me for a reason so I’m just going to come in and give it all that I have in terms of picking it up, trying to push myself, and learning as much as I can mentally and trying to take that on while also making sure I stay up on everything physically. So, it’s going to be tough. It’s a challenge, and I’m excited for it. It’s better than sitting on the couch."
We’ll see how he does on Thursday. We expect one or two Eagles fans to be glued to the screen for this one.
