After a four week battle, what’s next for the young running backs at the bottom of the Philadelphia Eagles depth chart?

That’s all she wrote for the 2018 NFL preseason. It was fun while it lasted (not really). The Philadelphia Eagles came out on top of a low-scoring battle against the New York Jets, picking up a 10-9 win. As crazy as it sounds, it was the Eagles first victory since they defeated the New England Patriots back in February for Super Bowl LII. We’re not here to talk about the win-loss column, though. Let’s discuss the best-case scenario for the running back position.

First of all, we know that Jay Ajayi is the starter. He won’t get every single carry, but we at least know that he will be held accountable for most of the carries. Second, we are fully aware that Corey Clement and Darren Sproles will see a ton of work outside of the backfield as well. Doug Pederson’s offense thrived with the running back committee last season, so there’s no way he stays away from it this season either.

So, now we need to figure out who the fourth, and possibly fifth running back is on the roster. After four preseason matchups, we should have a good idea of who could potentially make the roster. It won’t be an easy decision for Howie Roseman and the coaching staff, as most candidates made a solid case for themselves.

It wasn’t perfect, but over time these young talents can have the opportunity to master their craft with running backs coach Deuce Staley if they make the team. Now, let’s summarize each of the young runners preseason to decide who may or may not make the final 53-man roster after this week.
