Philadelphia Eagles running back Donnel Pumphrey has been informed of his release on Saturday.

Labor Day Weekend is always the toughest for young NFL prospects. It’s the weekend that the roster hopefuls find out if they made the team that they have been playing for over the course of the spring and the summer. For some guys, it’s almost routine as it has happened multiple times throughout the years. For other guys, it’s just the first time, and it could be the last.

On Saturday afternoon, the Eagles made one of their more significant cuts. The team has informed 2017 fourth-round pick Donnel Pumphrey that he has been released. It’s not a shocking move, but it is quite disappointing that Pumphrey could not pan out in the Eagles backfield.

During his rookie year, Pumphrey barley made the team as he was practically ‘red-shirted’ by being placed on the injured reserve. Although he wouldn’t play last year, the Eagles still had high hopes for the young running back to have somewhat of a breakout offseason in 2017. He showed some improvement during OTAs, but once again the young running back could not stay healthy and ended up missing more than half of the preseason. For that, it was time relieve Pumphrey from his services with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Pumphrey thanks Philly:

Pumphrey’s time in Philly was short, but at least he had the opportunity to experience the road to Super Bowl LII first-hand. We’re not sure where he will end up, but it was evident that the Eagles did not need to use up a spot on the final 53-man roster for him. There’s a very good chance that if Pumphrey clears waivers, the Eagles will bring him back on the practice squad. The chances are that he will find a team that will pick him up as a returner, though.

He has displayed upside in offseason practices, but his inability to stay healthy makes it very tough to trust him. Pumphrey may get a regular season snap at some point in 2018, but it won’t be with the team that drafted him. That’s for sure.

Next. Eagles should not consider shifting Agholor outside. dark
