Malcolm Jenkins becomes the next Philadelphia Eagles player to re-work his contract to free up some cap space.

It’s finally September and Philadelphia Eagles money man, Howie Roseman is still in the office crunching some numbers. The team may be down to its final 53-man roster, but it’s highly doubtful that the current state of the team is complete. Nobody is safe at this point. Even after final cuts, the Eagles cut linebacker Joe Walker loose to bring in former Seattle Seahawks linebacker, D.J. Alexander.

The move was unexpected, but we are far from surprised. Roseman is hardly ever satisfied and always looking to get better. The only issue is the Eagles current money situation. It’s pretty much a well-known fact at this point that the Eagles are not the richest when it comes to cap space.

According to Over The Cap, the Eagles are within the bottom three in total cap space in the NFL. They are sitting in front of only the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Los Angeles Rams with negative $453k in space. Not an ideal situation. So, just like they have all offseason, the Eagles spoke to some veteran leaders to find out if they would like to re-work their contract. Well, safety Malcolm Jenkins was the latest candidate to work out his team financials.

A new contract for Jenkins:

We can all applaud Malcolm for helping out, but let’s not get things confused. Often, NFL fans confuse a re-worked contract with taking a pay cut. Sure, there are players around the NFL who would make less money in order to help out with additional moves elsewhere. But in this case, Jenkins is just getting his money a lot faster than he originall would. Basically, it’s a win-win situation for both parties.

ESPN Insider, Field Yates estimates that the Eagles now have $6.148M in cap space, which is a massive upgrade for the team. Do we know what the Eagles plan to do with the space? Not exactly. There aren’t too positions that are desperately in need.

Maybe the Eagles could sign a veteran wide receiver as they are without Alshon Jeffery for the first few weeks, but nothing is guaranteed as of now. Only time will tell, but we can assume that Howie is far from finished with making deals as week one approaches.
