Dear Eagles fans, enough with obsessing over reunions already
Why do Philadelphia Eagles fans obsess over reunions with former players?
How do we make it stop? It’s like every single week a former player is being discussed by Philadelphia Eagles fans as a potential target to return to the midnight green. Enough is enough already! I get it. The Chip Kelly era ripped out our hearts and souls a few years back. It all started when the old Chipper released wide receiver DeSean Jackson after he posted career-high numbers.
LeSean McCoy was traded off to the Buffalo Bills while he was still in his prime. And Chip’s crazy decisions eventually led Jeremy Maclin to walk off to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs after having his best year. Those days were rough, to say the least. But it’s time to let it all be in the past.
The Eagles made right decision to not bring McCoy back through the trade with the Bills to acquire Ronald Darby in 2016 because they did an excellent job of forming a stable bond in the backfield.
It made sense not to overpay for Jackson during the last offseason, regardless of how he played against the Eagles this past Sunday. And the Eagles are right by avoiding to re-sign Maclin or even worse, Jordan Matthews back to the squad as they are in search of more receivers. Although they have been rumored to try many of these moves in the past, it’s time just to let it all be and keep moving forward.
Let the past be the past:
The Eagles are what you would call in desperate need of a wide receiver at the moment. Alshon Jeffery is still out due to his shoulder injury. Mike Wallace is in jeopardy of being done for the season, and Mack Hollins is out for least the next four weeks.
That leaves the Eagles with Nelson Agholor, Shelton Gibson, Kamar Aiken, and DeAndre Carter. And although Carson Wentz is back in the mix this week, let’s all remember that he can’t be Superman. This set of receivers is going to be a significant test for the Eagles franchise quarterback these coming weeks.
On Monday morning, the fanbase went into a panic, rightfully so. When the news came out that Wallace is out for a while, and Josh Gordon would be traded to the New England Patriots, not the Eagles, the fan base automatically called for the signing of Maclin or Matthews.
Let me possibly be the thousandth person to say this for those who don’t believe; Jeremy Maclin is finished, and Jordan Matthews is nothing more than an injury-prone slot receiver. The Eagles need something, but it is not either of them.
Maybe, just maybe, Carson Wentz can get the best out of what they currently have until Alshon returns. And while that’s not a guarantee, it makes a lot more sense than wasting money on one of two wide receivers who will most-likely add onto the injury list all for sentimental purposes. So Eagles fans, there’s nothing wrong with showing love to former former players, but enough already with the reunions. It’s a new era in Philly. Let the past be the past.
