Here we all thought the wide receiver position was thin. Now, the running backs could be down to the fourth-string.

The injury bug had put some severe damage on the Philadelphia Eagles since before they won the Super Bowl. Just as everything feels like it’s starting to come together, more injuries and issues occur. Just last week, Eagles veteran second-string running back Darren Sproles tweaked his hamstring in practice. He was ruled out just a few days before last Sunday’s loss.

To add insult to injury, Eagles starting running back Jay Ajayi went down with a back injury almost immediately last week. Although he was able to return later on in the second half, the Eagles are going to take their time with his recovery. As of Friday afternoon, Sproles and Ajayi have been ruled out already for the Eagles second home game this season against the Indianapolis Colts.

Already the Eagles backfield looked thin as we head into Sunday, but it only gets worse. Now, a surprise name has shown up on the Eagles injury report as third-string running back Corey Clement has been listed as questionable. We know what you’re thinking. This can’t seriously be happening, right? But it is. And it is not an ideal situation for the Eagles offense.

If Clement can’t go, what happens?

According to Philadelphia Inquirers Zach Berman, Clement has been held out of practice for precautionary reasons. Although that is his understanding, the news has not been confirmed by anybody on the Eagles coaching staff as Clement remains questionable for Sunday. If Clement doesn’t get the green light to go, the Eagles are left with Wendell Smallwood and Josh Adams.

The return of Carson Wentz is big this week, but the Eagles have some glaring weak spots on offense. Part of the game plan against the Colts should’ve been to find a delicate balance between the ground game and the passing game. Unfortunately, the Eagles don’t seem to have a ton of star power in the backfield. Especially if Clement cannot play.

Therefore, Wentz may be throwing a lot more passes than he initially anticipated before his return. Here’s to hoping that Clement can play and the offensive line can pave some clear pathways for the inexperienced backs running the ball. The Eagles are going to need all the help they can get in order to move the ball this Sunday.
