It appears that realizing the NFL dream for former Philadelphia Eagles running back Donnel Pumphrey just gets further and further from becoming a reality.

It may be time to come to the realization that Donnel Pumphrey‘s NFL dreams are just never going to be realized. The Philadelphia Eagles, in 2017’s NFL Draft, took a chance in the fourth round with the 132nd-overall selection in hopes that they had found a diamond in the rough. After all, he did close his collegiate career as the NCAA‘s all-time leader in rushing yards in Division I FBS history.

Unfortunately, nothing we saw from Pumphrey at the collegiate level ever translated to what we saw from him in the NFL.

What happened exactly?

Pumphrey’s career in Philly was a combination of appearances on the practice squad and the Eagles’ injured reserve list. He’d never tote the rock in any Eagles game during his rookie season, but in his second season, the theory was he was turning a few heads and impressing his coaches.

It just wasn’t meant to be. When the final roster was released, Pumphrey wasn’t on it. It appeared his chances to play in the NFL had evaporated.

Then, in a bit of a surprise, the Detroit Lions gave Pumphrey another shot. He was signed to their practice squad on September 5th of 2018, but a little over three weeks later, the Lions made the same decision that the Eagles did.

Next. Jeffery cleared for contact, McLeod still in question. dark

Not only, was he not good enough to make the active roster, he wasn’t seen as a fit to be on the practice squad either. Oh well. At least he got a Super Bowl ring out of the whole thing. We’ll all be watching to see if he’s added to another NFL roster, although seeing that happen seems to be unlikely.
