Update: Wendell Smallwood missed practice because of a personal reason, not injury, according to Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane.

The Philadelphia Eagles backfield is taking a lot of hits of this season. What was once the most crowded position on the roster, has become the offense’s biggest question mark. First, they lose their return specialist and offensive weapon Darren Sproles to a hamstring injury. Then, they lost their feature back, Jay Ajayi for the season due to a torn ACL.

Although Corey Clement has been healthy lately, he is another back that is dealing with some nagging hamstring issues. All throughout the year, Wendell Smallwood has been the healthiest, and most reliable runner in the Eagles backfield. But that might just change this week as the third-year veteran missed practice on Wednesday.

Maybe the signing of Donnel Pumphrey to the practice squad had more meaning behind it. The Eagles depth in the backfield is hurting them. But knowing that Pumphrey may be one call away from being on the active roster is terrifying for a 3-4 Eagles team.

What are the details?

The absence of Smallwood is very concerning. It didn’t seem like anything went wrong for him on Sunday, but hopefully, it’s just the team being cautious with him. It’s hard to be sure that Smallwood is healthy though, considering his past issues in his first two years with the team.

dark. Next. Derek Barnett is out, Josh Sweat must step up

Smallwood has had his fair share of nagging injuries ever since he was drafted here, so it’s been kind of a surprise that he’s been so reliable as of late. But here we are playing the waiting game once again as the injuries continue to pile up.

The good news is that Clement might be back to one-hundred percent. But the bad news is that Sproles remains out while Smallwood is dealing with a mysterious injury. We will update when the official report comes out.
