Stagnating Start Could Be Biggest Issue for Philadelphia Eagles
By Regina Ham
Oh, where, oh where can our offense be?
Let’s come to the part of the crux of the problem. The Eagles offense ranks 22nd (that’s out of 32) in points-per-game. The offensive line used to be one of the best in the game but now is showing the holes in the curtain. It’s not helping Wentz and allowed 17 sacks on the poor guy.
The run game is ineffective with Jay Ajayi out for the year, and Corey Clement and Wendell Smallwood putting up underwhelming stats. Smallwood, who shockingly leads the Eagles in carries, has 233 yards and one touchdown on the season. Clement on the other hand, only has 161 yards and two touchdowns.
Receivers are lacking as well, but fortunately, the return of Alshon Jeffrey already made an immediate impact. Upon his arrival, he has put up 306 yards, and four touchdowns. The familiar name Nelson Agholor was a small bit of a saving grace early on, but since the return of Jeffery, his production took a bit of a hit.
Offensive line is offensively stagnant.
The offensive line has been…..they’re there. I’m sure they are somewhere. They’re confused about blitzes, and the QB took an undesirable amount of hits so far to start the season. Consistency with the pass protection is a problem, and it will remain a problem unless someone steps up to the plate and takes control of the defensive line.
Right tackle Lane Johnson is usually a bright spot for the team. He was the best offensive tackle for the Eagles last year. This year, it’s as if last year’s Lane is on a hiatus. Granted, he is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, but his struggles have slowed down the offense early on.
The type of hits Wentz takes week after week can’t keep happening if your franchise starting QB is trying to remain healthy for the rest of the season.
