Mike Vick speaks highly of Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz
Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Mike Vick has Carson Wentz’s back, despite what many people are saying about him.
A 4-5 record for the Philadelphia Eagles indicates that a Super Bowl hangover does exist. The fans are upset, and there’s no other way to put it. It’s unfortunate, and also understandable. However, there are many Eagles fans out there who are getting mad at some of the wrong things. Want to be angry at the defense’s struggles to close out a game? Go ahead.
Are you mad that the backfield isn’t good enough to be trusted? So am I. Are you upset about the offensive lines struggles to keep the quarterback’s pocket clean? That makes sense. But what doesn’t make sense is the anger towards the Eagles quarterback, Carson Wentz.
Is Carson Wentz perfect? No. He never will be. Not a single quarterback in the NFL is perfect. Especially one that is in their third season. I could point to the stat sheets and say “hey, Carson Wentz is doing much better than he was at this point last year statistically” but that’s a lazy argument right now.
So, let’s do this. Forget what the analysts came up with, and erase whatever some angry fan who wants Nick Foles back in the game said about Wentz, and hear from a guy who not only was successful in the NFL but who also played for the Eagles as well. Former Eagles quarterback Mike Vick was approached with this question on WIP: “Is Carson Wentz overrated?” and I think his response will satisfy some, if not, most Eagles fans moving forward.
Mike Vick defends Carson Wentz
"“I think he’s amongst the top (QB’s). I think he does a lot of great things well,” Vick told Marks & Reese on Wednesday. “Obviously, the QB position is based off rhythm. But when I look at Carson Wentz and I think about this franchise, I’m proud that this will be our guy for the next 15 years. Because, listen, it might not happen this year. It might not happen next year. As long as he continues to play well and show promise, he’ll have those opportunities.“I think he’ll have so many opportunities to just continue to get better. He’s still young. A ton of pressure is put on this guy based on what happened last year.”"
Does anybody feel a little bit better? Look, I know Wentz hasn’t had his Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers moment to close out a game, but he cannot have blame placed on him. The defense is accountable for blowing leads. The wide receivers are responsible for critical drops. The offensive line is accountable for struggling to block. And the coaches are responsible for some of the questionable play calling.
So maybe Wentz isn’t an MVP in 2018. So what? How can you not be encouraged about what he’s been able to do since being back from a significant knee injury, and working with what he’s got? Maybe Vick’s confidence will help Eagles fans understand the situation more. Perhaps not. Either way, Wentz has plenty of time left in his career. Eagles fans were patient enough to wait for a Super Bowl, so they should be patient enough to let their franchise quarterback develop and learn.
