Flashback Friday: Jason Kelce delivers his famous Super Bowl speech
On this day in 2018, Jason Kelce and the Philadelphia Eagles were parading down Broad Street after defeating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.
The cold temperatures were nothing around this time last year. All that mattered in the great city of Philadelphia was the fact that the Vince Lombardi trophy would be seen in the town for the first time since the franchise’s existence. Four days before the parade, the Eagles were in Minnesota preparing to take on the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl for the first time since 2005.
Nobody expected the underdogs to come barking. As soon as Carson Wentz went down, that was it. The Eagles were no longer favorites. It took Nick Foles a couple of games to get into his groove, but luckily the defense would continue to play like they were truly the best in the league. That entire stretch was no fluke. The Eagles earned their spot in Super Bowl LII, and they took exactly what was theirs after four long quarters of play.
Eventually, the team made their way back to the city, and the route from the stadium to the Art Museum was all set and ready to go for the Eagles first parade in history. Double-decker buses drove all through town as the team caught beers in mid-air and chugged. And by the time the Eagles got to the Art Museum steps, or better known as ‘The Rocky Steps,’ Jason Kelce was ready to deliver perhaps the most famous speech in Philly sports history.
Let’s watch it one more time
After that WWE-style promo, the internet went crazy. It wouldn’t be long until Jason Kelce in a mummers costume became a meme. A ton of Eagles spoke after the parade route, but the team saved the best for last. Nobody had a speech more memorable. Jason Kelce stepped up to the podium with tons of energy and called out doubters by name. He also called out each individual player on the roster who was pretty much doubted at the beginning of the 2017 season.
Best of all though? Kelce acknowledged the city of Philadelphia, who has been starving for a Super Bowl victory since…ever. For that, the fans will forever appreciate the All-Pro center. Just as much as the fans enjoy the Eagles for bringing it all home, the players seem to appreciate the fan base for doing all that they can to cheer the team on throughout the entire season. Hopefully, the Eagles will get to experience this feeling a few more times in the near future.
