Philadelphia Eagles extend veteran center, Jason Kelce
The Philadelphia Eagles are extending their All-Pro center, Jason Kelce.
For a moment there, Jason Kelce had us worried. Towards the end of the 2018 NFL Season, there were rumors that Kelce could be calling it quits. It was hard to believe, but the veteran center wouldn’t deny the rumors. When asked about his potential retirement, Kelce didn’t hesitate to be up front and honest about it. The rumors were false about his decision being made up, but Kelce would be lying if he said he wasn’t thinking about it.
Well, we don’t have to worry about that anymore. Not only is Kelce not retiring in 2019, but he’s also signed an extension with the Eagles, that gives him an extra year on his contract. Now, instead of being finished in 2020, Kelce is in Philly through 2021.
The official announcement
According to NFL Insider Adam Caplan, Kelce’s deal is a three-year deal, including the one-year extension, which is valued at $11 million-per-season. That makes Jason Kelce the highest-paid center in the NFL. Are there any complaints? There shouldn’t be. Kelce deserves every dollar of his deal. Just a couple of seasons ago he had a down year, and many assumed that it was time for the Eagles to cut the cord and move on from Kelce. Nowadays, he’s an All-Pro center, and paid like the best center in the league, which is well-deserved.
Without Kelce, the Eagles would’ve had a ton of problems of front. With Brandon Brooks’ return aiming to be mid-to-later in the 2019 season, and Jason Peters’ future being uncertain, the loss of Kelce would’ve put the Eagles in rebuild mode for their offensive line this offseason. Thankfully, that will not be the case. The Eagles are taking care of their own, and locking in their guys for as long as they can. Now, what will they do with Peters?
