Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz is heading into a contract year in 2019. Reports have been indicating that an extension in 2019 in ‘unlikely.’

It’s almost that time for the Philadelphia Eagles to start saving up some money to invest into a quarterback. It’s been a while since the Eagles have had to pay a quarterback the big bucks. We’re talking franchise quarterback money. Ever since the days of Donovan McNabb, the Eagles have struggled to find the real answer to the position. We’ve seen the Eagles attempt to find the long-term solution in guys like Mike Vick, Nick Foles, and Sam Bradford, but those experiments didn’t work out the way they would like to when it came to being the answer for the long haul.

When the Eagles traded a boatload of picks to the Cleveland Browns for the No. 2 pick to draft Carson Wentz, it really seemed like the Eagles were much closer to finding their next true franchise quarterback. Wentz looked alright in 2016, but he had tons of room for improvement. His jump in progression during the 2017 season was incredible though.

Not only were the Eagles dominating the NFL, but Wentz was viewed as the league MVP until a torn ACL derailed those chances. We all know what happened after that. And in 2018, we didn’t see the same Wentz. As he rehabbed throughout the offseason, Wentz seemingly rushed back to the gridiron and didn’t look as sharp as he did in the past. Although Wentz was a lot better than the overreacting national media would tell you, his second consecutive season-ending injury has made the Eagles a bit worried about his future.

When will the Eagles know that it’s time to pay Wentz?

Eagles’ Head Coach Doug Pederson has continued to back Carson Wentz every chance he gets. Not for one second do we believe that Wentz is not the long-term answer for the Eagles. We’re not questioning whether Wentz gets paid or not before he becomes a Free Agent next year. We’re questioning just how much is he going to get when it’s time to negotiate.

Right now, the Eagles could be in talks with Wentz and his agent about a brand new contract. Many believed that an extension would get done this spring. However, some recent reports shoot down those assumptions. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane, Wentz’s chances of getting an extension this offseason is “increasingly unlikely.”

The Eagles have many needs right now outside of the QB position, and they need all the cap space they can get right now in order to keep their team competitive in the NFC. Keeping Wentz’s major contract extension out of their plans for a bit could really help them short-term. For both parties, waiting could be a good idea. But if Wentz goes out and has another MVP-like season in 2019, he could be in for a record-breaking payday, worth way more than he would have gotten this year. Only time will tell how much Wentz will get paid, but it doesn’t seem like we’ll find out this year.
