The Philadelphia Eagles have extended veteran offensive guard Isaac Seumalo.

Philadelphia Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman is up getting no sleep. Around this time of the offseason, Howie does everything that he can to take of his own. Whether it’s giving Brandon Graham his big time, $40 million contract. Or randomly extending Jason Kelce for an extra season, Howie Roseman is trying to retain all of their guys when they feel it is necessary.

This time around, the Eagles have extended the veteran offensive guard, Isaac Seumalo. Although Seumalo still had a year left on his contract, the Eagles didn’t feel like playing the waiting game with him. Instead of waiting until 2020 to re-sign Seumalo, the Eagles have extended him through the 2022 season, which locks him into a new three-year deal.

The Announcement

The terms of the new contract extension are not out yet, but with this move we have to assume that the Eagles free up some cap space for now. At first, the Kelce extension didn’t make much sense either, but later we would find out that the Eagles did not take any sort of cap hit for the 2019 offseason due to Kelce’s extension. We’re assuming that may be the case with Seumalo’s new extension as well.

Now, the writing is on the wall for Seumalo’s backup. Stefen Wisniewski might’ve did well for the Eagles during their final stretch of the 2017 season all the way to Super Bowl LII, but the Eagles didn’t seem too fond of him being the starter moving forward. It didn’t take long, but Wiz ended up getting benched for Seumalo just a few weeks into the season.

Although Seumalo improved his game, it’s clear he could still use some work. Hopefully, he has another offseason filled with improvements. After all, the Eagles coaching staff viewed Seumalo as one of the most improved players throughout the 2018 training camp. We’ll see how he plays with a new extension under his belt in 2019.
