Eagles dropped out of trade talks with the Steelers for Antonio Brown
The Philadelphia Eagles might’ve had interest in Antonio Brown, but they have dropped out of the race.
A lack of cap space clearly doesn’t stop Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles front office from anything. With a couple of restructures and extensions, Mr. Roseman can clear up space with the snap of a finger and make room for more big-time moves. Although we don’t typically see the Eagles trade for a top-tier player at a position such as wide receiver or running back during the offseason, it doesn’t mean that they don’t try to make it happen.
This offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been busy. Not only did they have to figure they will lose Le’Veon Bell to Free Agency, but they had a lot of issues with their veteran wide receiver, Antonio Brown. After a season full of drama, which caused them to miss the playoffs, Brown has decided to quit on Pittsburgh. He wants to continue playing football, but he won’t as long as he’s on contract with the Steelers. Hence the reason why are they shopping him around.
Naturally, the Eagles got involved with the sweepstakes. It’s unclear of just how serious they were about acquiring Brown, but it’s far from surprising that they showed interest. No matter who’s on the trade block, if the Eagles could use them in some sort of way, Howie Roseman is doing his due diligence and will make a call. In this case, he made the call, got some feelers, and ultimately decided to drop out of the race as things start to heat up.
Eagles will no longer pursue Antonio Brown
According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, and the Philadelphia Eagles have all reached out but are finished with making offers. There’s no information on who, or what the Eagles had packaged in an offer, but we do know that now the Eagles are out of the race.
With a team like the Oakland Raiders being the favorite, it’s clear that they have much more of a need for Brown and most likely offered up some substantial assets to get him. Apparently, the Steelers want this done sooner than later as well, so Friday is the deadline for all trades.
So for those of you who were worried, or excited about getting Antonio Brown, just know that it’s all over now for the Eagles. Although it was a longshot that they landed him, the fact that they were in trade talks with Pittsburgh in the first place shows that Roseman is considering every single move that could potentially make the Eagles a better team in 2019.
