Report: Nelson Agholor ‘likely’ to remain with the Philadelphia Eagles
As the Philadelphia Eagles traded for DeSean Jackson, some speculate that Nelson Agholor could get released or traded.
Will the Philadelphia Eagles hold onto their slot wide receiver, Nelson Agholor? That’s been one of the critical questions ever since the 2019 NFL Offseason began. As a former first-round pick, Agholor had a fifth-year option available for the 2019 season. The Eagles were convinced after his breakout year in 2017 that he was only going to go up from there. While Agholor had a reasonably decent year in 2018, he didn’t quite live up to the hype the following year.
Are the Eagles better off with Agholor on the team? Absolutely. However, his $9.4 million cap hit isn’t so favorable on paper. Hence the reason why Agholor became a potential cap casualty or trade target. Keeping Agholor for his production in the slot is not the issue, but paying him so much while there are other strapping needs on the team is what makes this entire situation difficult for the Eagles.
As the Eagles traded for DeSean Jackson at the start of the legal tampering phase of the offseason, many believed that there was a good chance that the writing was on the wall for Agholor’s career with the Eagles. While there haven’t been any reports of a potential Agholor trade coming to light, it doesn’t sound like the Eagles will release him for nothing either, which most likely means that he will still be around when offseason workouts begin.
Agholor is ‘likely’ to stay in Philly
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane, the Eagles are ‘likely’ to keep Agholor around. And while many speculated that Agholor could stay around on one condition – which would be a re-structure on a possible extension, it doesn’t seem likely that happens as well. With the way we see it, Agholor is potentially a prove-it year. As he is clearly much better than he was during his first two seasons in the league, it’s still unclear if Agholor is worth a big-time contract.
