2019 NFL Free Agency: Golden Tate is back in the NFC East with the Giants
The Philadelphia Eagles no longer have Golden Tate, but they play against him twice a year now.
Well, another one bites the dust. After spending a couple of days entertaining offers on the 2019 NFL Free Agency market, former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Golden Tate has inked a deal with the New York Giants. Instead of playing with him, the Eagles will have to play against him twice a year, for the next four years. So instead of seeing Odell Beckham all the time, the Eagles will have to go against one of their former temporary players.
Tate didn’t spend a long time in Philly. The Eagles acquired him with only a couple hours left on the NFL trade deadline halfway through the 2018 season at the expense of a third-round pick. At the time, the trade looked good for the Eagles, as they needed help in the passing game, but it ultimately turned out to be a failure as they struggled to get Tate really involved.
When a friend turns into the enemy
According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Tate’s deal is four years, worth $37.5 million. Quite the payday for Tate, who was upset that he didn’t receive any offers from the Eagles last month. After his somewhat failed stint during the second half of the 2018 season, Tate was expecting to see an extension offer from the Eagles. Obviously, it would’ve been interesting to see what could have been if Tate spent an entire offseason/season with the Eagles, but his contract demands weren’t really in the budget.
Plus, it was clear that Tate and Nelson Agholor could not coexist. As both wideouts thrive in the slot position, it wouldn’t make sense to cough up over $9 million for Agholor, and a $37 million long-term deal for Tate as well. It’s unfortunate that the trade didn’t exactly work out, but at least Tate had his one shining moment with the touchdown catch on fourth and goal against the Chicago Bears. At least there’s that.
