NFC East news: Giants meet with Dwayne Haskins, per report
The NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports the Giants met with Dwayne Haskins prior to Ohio State’s Pro Day. Things are getting interesting in the NFC East.
Here’s something Philadelphia Eagles fans might find interesting about one of the rivals. Tuesday night, just one day prior to Ohio State’s Pro Day, the New York Giants met and had dinner with Buckeyes quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Things are getting real interesting around the NFC East, aren’t they?
The NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo gave us the report shortly after breakfast on Wednesday.
Take a look:
Giants general manager David Gettleman seems to be unwilling to admit to this, but New York seems to be in complete rebuild mode. A team that was at the bottom in the league in several defensive categories shipped off two of their best defensive players, Olivier Vernon and Landon Collins.
Then, we’re not sure if you’re aware of this or not, but rumor has it they sent off a rather high-profile wide receiver, one whom they had just signed to a rather large extension at the end of August.
Oftentimes, it’s seemed as though the Giants have been hesitant about offending Eli Manning. There’s been no real attempt to draft and develop a successor, despite the fact that Manning’s clearly past his prime.
That may also lead one to believe that the Giants are in win-now mode. Rather than replace Manning, the Giants have tried to give him weapons, most recently Saquon Barkley. There’s just one problem. They haven’t been winning. If there was ever a time to draft a franchise signal caller, it would be now.
Haskins is, quite possibly, the best pocket passer in this draft class. In his final season in Columbus, he completed over 70 percent of his passes while throwing for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns (he only threw eight interceptions).
Add 85 rushing attempts that resulted in 108 yards and four rushing touchdowns as well, and you can see why he cruised to Big Ten Player of the Year honors and a Rose Bowl MVP award. He was also one of the finalists for the Heisman Trophy.
The Giants are interested. They’ll be at his Pro Day in Columbus. Will they pull the trigger in April at the 2019 NFL Draft? Only time will tell.
