C.J. Anderson is impatiently waiting for his next team to call. Could the Philadelphia Eagles be targeting him?

All around the city of Philadelphia, you can feel the panic settling in from many about the state of the Philadelphia Eagles backfield. First of all, let me just say this – Relax, it’s only March. Second off, it seems this is what the Eagles planned to do all along if they couldn’t get their hands on former Atlanta Falcons running back, Tevin Coleman.

Right now, the Eagles are clearly playing the waiting game. This isn’t new, as they have done this before in the recent past. Howie Roseman has been on the phone putting out some feelers for potential trades with San Francisco, Chicago, and Cleveland. Meanwhile, there are still a couple of veterans sitting on the market just watching their value decrease by the day.

Do you know what this feels like? The spring of 2017. A little under a year before the Eagles made their magical Super Bowl run. In March, the state of the backfield was similar to how it is now. It looked desperate. Then, the Eagles waited until May to strike a deal with a veteran running back who has been waiting around for a call. His name was LeGarrette Blount, and the Eagles got him for a whopping price of $2.8 million, just one season after he led the NFL in touchdowns.

How did the Eagles utilize Blount in that situation?

Blount was aging and had little to no success outside of New England in the past, which shied teams away from him. So the Eagles scooped him up for cheap and gave him the job of a power back in a committee full of young, elusive running backs. That year, the Eagles drafted Donnel Pumphrey, and signed Corey Clement, in hopes that one of them compliment Blount’s game nicely.

Although Pumphrey didn’t work out, Clement shocked a lot of people that year as he did an excellent job filling in. Unfortunately, Darren Sproles ended up getting injured, so the Eagles needed to bring in somebody else to help out. That’s when the Eagles struck a deal with the Miami Dolphins to acquire Jay Ajayi. This year, we can’t expect a midseason trade, but we should expect the Eagles to select a running back at some point once again during the draft.

Then, they can match that rookie along with Clement, who serves the pass-catching role, while the Eagles may bring in another veteran power back for a cheap season. Blount is still available, but his best days may be behind him. That’s why the Eagles could consider a younger option, with a similar style. That’s where C.J. Anderson comes in to play.

Could the Eagles give C.J. Anderson a call?

As C.J. Anderson waits for his next opportunity, the Eagles could be waiting patiently to strike. Right now, there’s a chance that the Eagles get Jay Ajayi back on a short-term deal, but I believe Ajayi is still searching for a different situation. As he visited the Indinapolis Colts earlier in the week, Ajayi seems to be open to moving on from Philly as he may not see a long-term future there knowing they will most likely draft a running back.

At 28-years-old, Anderson cannot be picky. If the Eagles were to call him at some point, there’s a good chance he comes and plays in Philly. As Anderson did fairly well for the Los Angeles Rams for their late season, and postseason run, he could be the perfect candidate for what the Eagles are potentially looking for. Could he be another LeGarrette Blount-type addition? Only time will tell. But if all else fails this offseason, Anderson will most likely be available for cheap.
