It’s not a matter of if the Philadelphia Eagles extend Carson Wentz. It’s a matter of when they decide to do so.

The Philadelphia Eagles had the fan base divided this offseason as they made a critical decision regarding the quarterback position. Knowing that they traded a ton of draft assets to trade up in the 2016 NFL Draft to get Carson Wentz, the Eagles want to stick by their guns. However, the “what have you done for me lately” saying crept up into many Eagles’ fans heads this past season when the idea of getting rid of Nick Foles for Carson Wentz was being talked about.

Ever since Foles returned to Philly in 2017, he knew his role. Even after winning the NFC Championship, Foles recognized that if and when he won Super Bowl LII, the moment Wentz is healthy again, Foles takes a backseat. It happened, and unfortunately, the 2018 NFL season was a strange one for the quarterback position.

Wentz would return rather quickly during Week Three, which was a bit of a relief considering that Foles wasn’t looking so hot. And while Wentz was visibly rusty, he looked solid upon his return. Unfortunately, Wentz’s 2018 season made him seem regressed in comparison to his 2017 MVP effort. It was a down season for Wentz, and there’s no other way to put it.

But if a career-high completion percentage, 21 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in eleven games is a bad year, then the Eagles aren’t in the worst situation exactly. The issue with Wentz isn’t his skillset though. It’s the fact that he couldn’t stay healthy over the last two seasons.

A torn ACL in 2017 was believed to be a part of his fractured back issue, which occurred in 2018. According to the Eagles medical staff, Wentz could’ve finished the season out last year. But the future risk wasn’t worth it. Therefore, the Eagles shut him down. Now, they have to figure out what they want to do with Wentz moving forward.

Will Carson Wentz get an extension this year?

While in Arizona for the NFL’s coaches and owners meeting, Howie Roseman briefly met with the local media. That’s where he put an emphasis on the idea of extending Carson Wentz. There were rumors that Wentz’s extension most likely won’t happen this offseason, but as the Eagles still have over $20 million in cap available, they seem to have the funding to do it.

The question at this point isn’t “will Wentz get extended,” it’s “when will Wentz get extended.” The Eagles obviously want to hold onto him for a while, but the idea of paying a quarterback, who gets hurt often a record-breaking contract isn’t ideal from a financial standpoint.

There’s a chance that the Eagles could wait until Wentz gets back on track, and wrap up a deal halfway through the year. Or the Eagles can get it out of the way now, and avoid watching Wentz’s price tag go back up if he returns to his MVP form. The Birds have time to figure it out, but they definitely aren’t questioning the idea of keeping Wentz long-term. That’s for sure.
