Jay Ajayi’s agent makes it known that a potential return to the Eagles is possible
After leaving Indianapolis without a contract, Jay Ajayi’s reps are still discussing a potential return to the Philadelphia Eagles.
At this point, it’s becoming hard to guess what the Philadelphia Eagles are going to do with their backfield. With only a handful of young, unproven guys on the squad, moves need to be made. Seeing as though Howie Roseman addressed the state of the backfield at the NFL combine last month, it really seemed like that’s where their focus is going to be for the NFL Draft.
However, just because the Eagles have plans to draft a rookie, doesn’t mean that they are neglecting the position through Free Agency. They wanted Tevin Coleman, but couldn’t sway him away from wanting a reunion with his former offensive coordinator in San Francisco. Le’Veon Bell was a pipe dream, and the Eagles were never interested. Now, they are left with the bottom of the barrel backs in Free Agency, which includes their former running back, Jay Ajayi.
Last season, the Eagles gave Ajayi an opportunity to take over as the number one back. Unfortunately, he suffered two separate injuries early on. And his second injury, which was a torn ACL, ended his season and currently has him still nursing his knee in rehab. Although Ajayi’s history with injuries was already a concern, it sounds like his most recent issue is causing him to have a lack of a market in Free Agency. And while talks are still ongoing with the Colts, Ajayi’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus makes it clear that Philly is still in play as well.
Could Ajayi return to the Eagles?
Right now, it sounds like the Colts and the Eagles are undecided on signing Ajayi. I wouldn’t assume there is some major bidding war going on here. While Ajayi has had his flashes over his first few years in the NFL, his inability to remain healthy for the Eagles has been a significant concern over the last season. Similar to Eagles’ cornerback Ronald Darby, Ajayi probably sees offers that are much less than he expected. Now, he may have to take the same route as Darby and go with a one-year, prove-it deal.
For the Eagles, that would be the best case scenario coming out of Free Agency. If they could get Ajayi for cheap on a one-year deal, that still gives them the opportunity to draft and develop a running back. And with that, they can rotate a rookie, Ajayi, and Corey Clement on gameday. Then, come next offseason, if everything worked out well with their rookie, Ajayi can test the market once again and hopefully find himself a better long-term deal.
