Philadelphia Eagles add more depth at tight end with Richard Rodgers
The Philadelphia Eagles make another depth signing by adding tight end, Richard Rodgers back on the team for 2019.
Are the Philadelphia Eagles done making a splash during the 2019 NFL Free Agency period? Well, with pretty much all of the top available names off the market, there really isn’t much left for the Eagles to do aside from sitting tight and adding veteran depth. Despite having a fair amount of cap space available, the Eagles are most likely going to continue to scout this upcoming rookie class, and add some more top prospects via draft selection.
As always though, depth is key for the Eagles. Seeing as though they suffered many injuries throughout the last two seasons, having veteran experience available is always helpful. Especially if the veterans are familiar with the team. So instead of shaking things up for next season at the tight end position, the Eagles brought back a familiar face by re-signing Richard Rodgers.
The Official Announcement
The Eagles added former Green Bay Packers tight end, Richard Rodgers, right around this time last season. At first, it seemed as though Rodgers was going to become the replacement for Trey Burton. That was until the Eagles moved back in the draft to sit back and eventually draft Dallas Goedert. The addition of Goedert sent Rodgers back to the third spot on the depth chart, but a preseason injury prevented his debut with the team from happening for a while.
Rodgers didn’t contribute much for the Eagles during the seven games he appeared in. He caught his one and only targeted pass for seven yards. It’s clear that Rodgers won’t be viewed as anything more than a reliable veteran in terms of depth for the next two seasons. At least with his addition, the Eagles won’t have to worry about adding another piece through the draft, or Free Agency.
