The Philadelphia Eagles go fishing in the AAF bin and come out with two bargain signings, quarterback Luis Perez and wide receiver Greg Ward.

As soon as it started, it was over. The well-publicized AAF suspended operations led to talk of league-wide signings. On April 4, an announcement was made through their Twitter account that players were eligible to leave their current contracts to pursue contracts with NFL teams. The Philadelphia Eagles responded by adding two prospects of their own, quarterback Luis Perez and wide receiver Greg Ward.

Here are three interesting facts on the former:

1. Like Carson Wentz, Perez won a national championship at the Division II level.

Perez played his college ball at Texas A&M–Commerce. In 2017, he won the NCAA Division II National Championship. Following the season, he’d be named a First Team All-American, and he earned First Team All-Lone Star Conference honors for the second time in two years.

He also received the Harlon Hill Trophy, an award given to the best college football player at the Division II level.

2. He does have some NFL experience.

Perez went undrafted in 2018 but was invited to attend the Los Angeles Rams rookie minicamp. He’d be signed and see some action in their final preseason game before being waived on September 1st, signed to the practice squad on September 2nd, and released on September 18th.

We wouldn’t see him again until his arrival in the AAF.

3. Perez’s deal is for one season.

On April 8th, the Eagles signed Perez to a one year deal, per a report by Sirius XM NFL Radio’s Adam Caplan. Take a look at this one:

Philly may still take a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft. There’s no guarantee that they won’t bring someone else in to create competition. The theory is Carson Wentz and Nate Sudfeld are guaranteed spots, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Perez threw for five touchdowns, six interceptions and 1,460 yards in his time with the Birmingham Iron. Those aren’t overwhelming numbers. We’ll have to wait and see how his skillset translates to the NFL as he’s now been given a second chance at stardom.
