Philadelphia Eagles tight end group listed second in latest power ranks
Where does the Philadelphia Eagles’ tight ends group rank in the NFL, according to SB Nation? High, but not high enough.
Recently, SB Nation has taken it upon themselves to put together multiple power rankings regarding every team’s individual offensive positions. From the backup quarterback to the backfield, and the wideouts, they had all 32 teams ranked based off of the outcome. This time around for their final installment of the series, SB Nation took a look at the tight end position.
The Philadelphia Eagles fared well for the passing game in their wide receiver power ranks, but their backfield wasn’t exactly top tier. Knowing they have one of the better tight ends in the game though, it was going to be interesting to see where they would rank on that list.
With Zach Ertz coming off of a record-breaking season, it was quite clear the Eagles were likely to be top five in that category. And with Dallas Goedert having a solid rookie year in Ertz’s shadows, the tight end group is definitely a major threat to the Eagles’ opponents this upcoming season.
Some would say they have the best tight end group in the NFL with Ertz and Goedert. However, SB Nation doesn’t see them as the top dogs. Instead, Eric Ebron and Jack Doyle of the Indianapolis Colts found themselves headlining the list. The Eagles came in at second on the list.
Ertz, Goedert, and Rodgers the second-best?
"“Ertz is a 28-year-old Pro Bowler who set career highs in catches (116), receiving yards (1,163), and catch rate (74.4 percent) last season. Goedert didn’t need much time to adjust to the league even after playing his college ball at South Dakota State, grading out as one of league’s best run blockers at his position. After hauling in 33 catches and four touchdowns, he’s capable of filling the gaps others leave behind if they focus too hard on Ertz. Rodgers is a useful depth option and special teamer who can catch the hell out of a Hail Mary.”"
The Eagles didn’t win this battle in the power rankings. However, the 2019 season could change that. With a significant sophomore effort incoming for Goedert, it is likely that the Eagles dynamic duo of Ertz and Dallas could be quite effective and perhaps their most dangerous unit on the team. And with the Eagles upgrading in other areas on the offense as a whole, that leaves plenty of opportunities open for the tight ends in the passing game.
