With Darren Sproles currently unsigned, the Philadelphia Eagles could be looking to use Boston Scott as their long-term replacement.

This year, the Philadelphia Eagles are looking to be a much more improved offensive unit. While a lot of their important upgrades were on the offensive line and in the passing game — their upgrades to the backfield could be what makes or break the production of the offense.

Last year, there were problems everywhere for the struggling Eagles offense, but it all seems to get back to the lack of a run game. Jay Ajayi was out for the year early on. Darren Sproles missed a large chunk of the season. Corey Clement struggled before going down, and Josh Adams and Wendell Smallwood are who they are — Reliable backups, but not of starting caliber.

So to upgrade the unit, the Eagles went out and traded for Jordan Howard while drafting Penn State’s Miles Sanders in the second round of the draft. While those two guys are gaining a ton of hype, there’s another under the radar player who has garnered a ton of attention throughout the OTAs portion of the offseason as well. Former Saints’ practice squadder, Boston Scott.

Re-Familiarize yourselves with Boston Scott

Since the Eagles had to deal with a load of injuries to their backfield last year, they had to make a few desperate moves. In order to obtain depth, and a contributor in the return game, the Eagles went out and signed former sixth-round pick Boston Scott of-of the New Orleans Saints practice squad. Just because Scott was used mostly as a special teamer last season, doesn’t mean he won’t get an opportunity to make a name for himself on the offense in 2019.

As a dual-threat, Scott is the prototype for the Eagles’ offense. At five-foot-seven-inches, Scott may be viewed as undersized for the NFL level. However, his quick-hitting speed and dual-threat ability to take on carries and catch out of the backfield make him a perfect candidate for the Eagles’ offensive rotation in 2019. While we’re not even past the voluntary portion of the offseason quite yet, it’s never too early to tell who’s going to put up a fight this summer.

Doug Pederson sees the potential

With the absences of Corey Clement, Miles Sanders, and Josh Adams, Scott is able to get a ton of work done in front of Assistant Coach Duce Staley, and the man in charge, Doug Pederson. So far, Scott has been quite impressive through the first two weeks. As the Eagles search for a player to fill the void of their veteran multi-talented threat Darren Sproles, a dark horse candidate may be up for the challenge. And in the eyes of Pederson, that dark horse is Boston Scott.

While Coach Pederson wasn’t opposed to bringing Sproles back, despite the age, it sure doesn’t seem like the Eagles’ front office will make that happen. With a ton of cooks already in the kitchen, it appears as though they are looking towards the future of the backfield. Being that Sproles’ role was so crucial in the past though, finding someone to fill that void is essential this offseason. And so far, Boston Scott has been the man for the job. He will be a player to look out for later on down the line as the offseason unfolds.
