The Philadelphia Eagles are set to work out veteran free agent safety Jonathan Cyprien on Tuesday in light of Malcolm Jenkins’ holdout.

Are we seriously entering a long standoff between veteran safety Malcolm Jenkins and the Philadelphia Eagles? It sure feels like it. Around this time of the year before, Jenkins wouldn’t hesitate to be at the Nova Care Complex for voluntary OTAs. Nowadays, the veteran safety is working out elsewhere and displaying all of that hard work on social media for his team to find it.

What is Jenkins’ plan exactly? Most likely, he wants a revised contract, which gives him more guaranteed money. At this point in time, Jenkins’ deal is a bit outdated. Since he last signed a four-year deal a few seasons ago, the safety market has changed. During this year’s free agency process, a few guys have been paid generously, which upped Jenkins’ value.

It’s unlike Malcolm Jenkins to chase the money, but at the same time, he deserves every penny. Since joining the Eagles in 2014, the veteran captain has yet to miss a game. Just last season, he didn’t even miss a snap. And if you watch the film, you would know that Jenkins doesn’t really take plays off either when he’s on the field. He deserves a raise, but the Eagles have to be willing to give him one. And so far, it doesn’t feel like that’s going to happen anytime soon.

What’s the latest at the safety position?

According to NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Jenkins’ holdout has “no end in sight.” That’s Schefter doubling-down on his take from last week when he stated that he would be surprised if Jenkins shows up for mandatory mini-camp. Although Doug Pederson noted on Monday that he expects everybody to be present for the mandatory portion of the offseason next week, that doesn’t really leave anybody with the belief that Jenkins will actually show. The front office included.

On Tuesday, the Eagles will be bringing in veteran safety Johnathan Cyprien for a workout. Cyprien, a 28-year-old safety will get a shot to earn a contract from the Eagles as they look to find a temporary Jenkins replacement if needed. He spent his first four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and recently had his year cut short in 2017 with the Tennesee Titans due to an injury.

Unfortunately, Cyprien didn’t play last season. But in his career, he’s appeared and started in 70 games while collecting two interceptions, 506 combination tackles, three sacks, and 12 tackles for a loss. Is Cyprien’s production on Malcolm Jenkins’ level? Not exactly. However, he could be a reliable temporary replacement if Jenkins takes his holdout down to the wire.
