Philadelphia Eagles: Howie Roseman speaks on the loss of Joe Douglas
The New York Jets have made it official with Joe Douglas, so now Howie Roseman has to search for a new partner.
For a moment, it seemed as though the Philadelphia Eagles were going to be able to keep Joe Douglas around for another year. Since bringing Douglas into the picture after the 2016 season, the Eagles have had to do some blocking from other teams who wanted to interview Douglas. While they have succeeded in doing so in the past, they couldn’t prevent it from happening this time around as the New York Jets were totally on board with hiring Douglas.
The Eagles have had three solid offseasons with Douglas on board. As Howie Roseman’s number two, Douglas has been equally as crucial to the front office’s success of drafting and acquiring players through free agency and trades. None of his success went unnoticed; hence, the reason why Douglas got so much attention as General Manager positions became vacant.
Last weekend, the New York Jets brought Joe Douglas in for dinner and an interview on two separate dates. Knowing that New York was desperate to get somebody in there, Douglas seemed like the only guy who could be right for the job.
The safest move, if you will. With negotiations falling apart late last week, the Eagles almost got lucky. But as the Houston Texans’ GM position opened up, New York panicked and gave Douglas precisely what he wanted. Now, Howie Roseman is in search of his next number two. Although he’s likely bummed out about the loss, he’s still excited for his friend, and now former partner.

No hard feelings here for Joe Douglas. In a way, the Eagles can be excited as they now have a friend within the New York Jets organization. As we’ve seen in the past, friendships between executives can be very beneficial. Remember, the Eagles were able to make some deals with Baltimore over the last couple of years, thanks to Douglas’ ties there. Now, Roseman has ties within New York just in case they need to get a deal done.
Losses happen in the NFL when a team is highly successful. This is nothing new for the Eagles’ new regime. Over the last two years, the Birds have lost offensive coordinator Frank Reich to a head coaching position. Then, their quarterback’s coach John DeFilippo got a promotion to offensive coordinator elsewhere. Now, they lose Douglas to the Jets.
