NBC Sports’ Chris Simms put together a list of his top NFL quarterbacks. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz didn’t touch his peak.

A torn ACL can surely do a lot to an NFL quarterback. Not only will it mess with their physical abilities, and their self-confidence — but it can also leave fans and analysts questioning their skillset and their ability to take over a franchise moving forward. The Philadelphia Eagles and their fan base know this well now as Carson Wentz is more than a year removed from ACL surgery.

Last year, Wentz returned by week three of the 2018 season, and something just wasn’t right. Despite putting up some impressive numbers in eleven games, the Eagles quarterback clearly wasn’t the same guy we saw from a season ago.

We can blame the fact that maybe he rushed himself back onto the field as he did tons of working out and practicing in addition to his rehab. We can also say that Wentz’s inability to adjust to the knee brace being a mobile quarterback killed his chances of stretching plays more last year.

Regardless of what the root of his problems was, it was evident that Wentz was not the same quarterback last year. And to top his slightly above average season off, Wentz ended up going down once again and being ruled out for the season. Now, he’s been slapped with the injury-prone label, and he can’t do anything to shake it unless he plays at least 16 games in 2019.

That’s all you hear about nowadays when it comes to Carson Wentz. Sure he’s good, but he can he stay healthy? Those questions are absolutely warranted. And because of his lack of availability over the last two seasons when the Eagles needed him the most, his stock has regressed. Last season, NBC Sports’ Chris Simms labeled him as the third-best quarterback in the NFL. This year, he didn’t even crack the top ten.

Availability is key for Carson Wentz

"“Here’s the thing with Carson Wentz and why he’s No. 11,” Simms said. “It’s really availability, is the No. 1 reason he’s No. 11. The talent is top-5 talent.Simms, a former NFL QB, went on to say Wentz is a “more physically gifted version of Andrew Luck.”"

According to NBC Sports Philadelphia, Chris Simms’ one and only reason why he couldn’t place Wentz within the top ten was because of his recent injury history. Is Wentz’s skillset something to be worried about? Apparently not. According to Simms, Wentz is a top-five talent. Unfortunately, his inability to stay healthy over the last two seasons makes him a liability.

There’s a lot of pressure from outside of the Eagles organization surrounding Wentz this season. Many expect him to remain an average young quarterback, who could potentially find himself missing a handful of games. Meanwhile, the Eagles are prepared to see a much more improved quarterback, who has finally shaken the recent injury bug and got out of his own head.
