Darren Sproles links up with former Philadelphia Eagles QB for a workout
Veteran running back Darren Sproles is working on getting a contract for the 2019 NFL season. Therefore, he’s been back on the gridiron.
Two years ago, many of us were under the impression that veteran running back Darren Sproles was ready to call it quits. Going into the 2017 season, Sproles hinted that the end was near. When asked if that year was going to be his last season on the Philadelphia Eagles, he grinned and pretty much confirmed that he was ready to hang it up soon.
Unfortunately, he didn’t go out the way he wanted to. Although Sproles did end up with a Super Bowl ring for being on the roster, he wasn’t able to participate in the miraculous run. After he went down with a torn ACL and a broken forearm during a week three battle against the New York Giants, Sproles would have to watch the remainder of the season from home.
Knowing how he went out, Sproles was hardly satisfied with how his career was going to end. Therefore, he convinced everybody that he was ready to make a comeback once again. It took a while for the Philadelphia Eagles to get back on board with him, but eventually, they did.
Sproles would join the Eagles on a one-year deal in 2019. As he made his way back to the field during week one for the first time in almost a year, the veteran running back was ready to get back to his old ways. Sproles scored in that game and was critical for the Eagles victory.
But his injury struggles would not go away. Once again, Sproles missed time for an injury, which caused him to end up playing for less than half the season. Now, Sproles is considering a third comeback season as he still feels unsatisfied with the way his career is ending at 36-years-old.
Another comeback season?
There have been some talks around the league lately about another potential Sproles comeback. Apparently, Sproles would like another opportunity to play, but the situation has to be right for him. In other words, he wants to play with some familiarity. Somewhere like New Orleans or Philly. It’s unclear if either of these teams would be interested, but just in case they are, Sproles has been working out so he can get back into football shape.
According to NJ.com’s Mike Kaye, Darren Sproles was recently working out with some former teammates of his. One quarterback happened to be his former Saints teammate, Drew Brees. The other quarterback was former Philadelphia Eagles backup, Chase Daniel. Does this mean Sproles is going to be signing somewhere soon? Not exactly.
At this point, teams know what Sproles is capable of doing, and a tryout wouldn’t really be necessary for him. He’s most likely getting into shape just in case a team calls him up to join them in training camp next month. Some staffers in Philly would like that team to be the Eagles, but their recent additions to the backfield make it difficult to want to add more players back there. At this point, it seriously feels like the Darren Sproles era is over in Philadelphia.
