The Philadelphia Eagles made a ton of moves during the 2019 NFL Offseason. Which of those moves happens to be the riskiest?

Every year, it seems we like to crown the Philadelphia Eagles for the kind of offseason they had. And how you could blame us? After all, Howie Roseman and company have done an excellent job of rebuilding this team from the disaster era of Chip Kelly. The 2019 offseason was no different.

The Eagles made multiple critical moves. They signed veteran defensive tackle Malik Jackson to a significant deal. They also retained Brandon Graham by getting him on a big three-year deal. Then, the Birds traded for DeSean Jackson while also trading away Michael Bennett.

There are plenty more moves we could highlight, but then we would be here all day. Out of all of the moves the Eagles made this offseason, which move happens to be the riskiest? Well, Bleacher Report put together a list of each NFL teams’ riskiest moves recently, and the Eagles weren’t listed for a move they made. Rather, it was a move they didn’t make.

Where did Philly go wrong?

According to Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, the Eagles inability to add a veteran backup quarterback to the team could be their riskiest move. With Nick Foles starting under center for the Jacksonville Jaguars now, the Eagles are left with Nate Sudfeld backing up Carson Wentz.

"“Given Carson Wentz’s injury history—he finished each of the last two seasons on the sidelines—the Philadelphia Eagles would have been wise to keep a seasoned veteran second on the depth chart. Keeping Foles around wasn’t financially feasible, but the Eagles could have looked to free-agent options such as Tyrod Taylor or Ryan Fitzpatrick.”“Ideally, Wentz will stay healthy over the course of his contract, and the backup role will be a complete afterthought. However, this is still a sizeable risk for a franchise firmly in the middle of a championship window.”"

We all know that Wentz’s health is his biggest concern. Hopefully, that won’t be the case after this season, but the Eagles know that nothing is guaranteed to go right here. Throughout the course of the offseason, Howie Roseman and Doug Pederson have expressed interest in adding a veteran quarterback into the mix to come in and compete with Nate Sudfeld.

While Cody Kessler is on board now, we’re pretty sure that’s not exactly the guy they were thinking of for that role initially. But due to demand for veteran quarterbacks to compete for starting jobs on less successful teams this offseason, the Eagles weren’t able to lock anybody in for that role, making Sudfeld the obvious choice to play Wentz’s backup.
