Philadelphia Eagles’ Carson Wentz is back in MVP conversations
Two years ago, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was an MVP favorite. Now, he’s back in the conversation as he’s fully healthy again.
Last season, the Philadelphia Eagles didn’t see the best play from their quarterback, Carson Wentz. While Wentz wasn’t nearly as bad as his critics made him seem, he surely wasn’t looking like the same quarterback we saw in 2017. And that year, Wentz was on another level.
Sure, Nick Foles was the quarterback who hoisted the Lombardi trophy in the end, but he definitely didn’t do it without Wentz’s help. We can play the ‘what if’ game all day, but we can’t be so sure if Foles would’ve put the Eagles in the same position as Wentz did in the regular season.
After all, Foles was quite shaky for a few games before he turned it up a notch late in the playoffs. In 2017, Wentz was just flat out phenomenal. Unfortunately, the injury that he suffered late in the year caused his 2018 effort to look a bit off.
The numbers weren’t so bad, but it’s clear what we saw on film was not the same confident, mobile quarterback, who creates his own opportunities putting on a show for the fans watching. Worst of all though, he got hurt late in the season right around the timing of his previous injury a year later. Now, we don’t know which Wentz will get for year four — the sharp Carson Wentz, who looks like he can be the best quarterback in the league. Or the decent quarterback, who struggles to really get the offense over the hump.
It sounds like MVP talk is back
For the first time in two years, Carson Wentz has started up the offseason programs fully healthy. He’s been a full participant in voluntary OTAs and mandatory minicamp. He’s been present throughout the whole process building up a chemistry with his new weapons. And just like two seasons ago, Carson Wentz is looking like he’s on top of his game once again.
There’s been plenty of offseason hype for No. 11 within the local media, but now the national analysts are beginning to catch on. Once again, Wentz is being brought up in MVP talks as former NFL scout, and current analyst Daniel Jeremiah calls Wentz his MVP favorite.
Jeremiah’s top five is nothing to be shocked about. But Wentz being first ahead of the defending MVP, Patrick Mahomes is quite shocking. Last season, Mahomes played out of his mind. The numbers he posted were on a whole other level in comparison to Wentz’s stats during his MVP campaign. We’re unsure if Jeremiah’s point was to say Mahomes won’t be out of this world good in 2019, or if he’s saying Wentz is going to be the one tossing nearly 50 TDs, playing out of this world. Regardless though, it’s good to see Wentz garnering some more hype after a highly critical season coming back from an ACL injury.
