2. Clarity at cornerback

By way of trades, draft picks, and waiver claims, the Eagles enter this season with a surprising level of depth at the cornerback position. While an enviable position to be in, there is an inherent pressure to find a working combination.

In the slot sits 2018’s two biggest breakout stars, Avonte Maddox and Cre’Von LeBlanc. Both players tout the scrappy, ball hawking ability you look for when matching up with nimble receivers and move tight ends. Expect their spots on the roster to be secure.

The outside is where things get interesting. There are two positions available for a combination of Ronald Darby, Jalen Mills, Sidney Jones, and Rasul Douglas. Something has to give.

From a pure ability standpoint, you have to think Darby is a lock to start, health permitting (ACL.) Douglas took a big step forward in 2018 as the lone healthy corner on the roster, while also the most physical of the group.

Jones remains an enigma as his potential continues to be hindered by an inability to stay on the field. Finally, Mills, is no stranger to the occasional deep test, but he’s proven to be steady and proven when it counts.

It’s hard to imagine the Eagles retain all six men heading into the regular season. While fans would love to see the Sidney Jones they expected out of Washington, the best bet may be to capitalize on his value as a highly regarded prospect and continue adding draft capital with fleeting cap space. Another possibility to look out for is a Joe Douglas reunion with Cre’Von LeBlanc in the ‘Big Apple’.

Only time will tell. Cornerback stability is something the Eagles have been starved of since Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown left. They will need it to make another run.
